Graduation

My class and teacher at graduation.  I got a 95% (or an A)!

Last Day of Class

Our last day of class was a big fiesta in one of the outdoor classrooms.  Apparently, we were being too loud because the person in the house next to the school started blasting heavy metal music from some very big speakers.  They then said over a microphone or loudspeaker, "If you don't shut up, neither will I."  They did this repeatedly.  Later, they yelled, "If you can't calm down, you won't escape the music."  We weren't even being loud.

Even some of the other neighbors were yelling at him to turn off the heavy metal music.

A group photo of my class.

My teacher, showing us something very important.

The Central Market

The central markets are just a crazy maze of shops.  There are shops selling shoes, pets, meat, flowers, you name it.  The smells are overwhelming.

Success!

Today a tica asked me for directions, in Spanish.  And I answered her, in Spanish.  And I gave her the correct directions, in Spanish.  That's what I call success!

Punishment

If we answered a question wrong in class today our punishment was to dance.  I didn't have to dance, not because I didn't get anything wrong but because I correctly answered, "me niego" (I refuse).  I guess I got points for that.

Breakfast

One of my favorite breakfasts: fresh fruit, a little bread, a little yogurt, and a lot of coffee.

Futbol

We watched a minor league soccer game in Cartago.  No one's sitting on the other side of the field because it was raining and the side I'm sitting on was covered.  The game ended in a tie (1-1).

Lunch at the Mercado

The mercados are big, crazy places that have tons of booths inside selling everything you could imagine; from meat, to pets, to flowers, to who knows what.  The smells are overwhelming.

Because they have big doors that are always open, there are dogs and cats and birds just roaming around inside.

We ate lunch in a little seating area above one of the stalls.

Tamarindo refresco

Tamales

Casado

A refresco with chopped up fruit in it.

Coati

This little animal is called a coati (pronounced co-aw-tee).

Irazu Volcano

Up in the clouds.

The water in the crater is lime green.

If I'm going to carry an umbrella around constantly, I'm going to use it for something.

Down in one of the craters (not the one filled with green water).

More clouds rolling in.

The leaves of this plant had to be about 4 feet in diameter.

We came across these rocks that someone else had arranged so we couldn't resist posing for pictures by them.

Workers

I enjoyed watching these guys work on the green building while waiting for the bus to Irazu.  Clearly, there are no OSHA regulations in Costa Rica.  I liked how they just climbed out of the window to work.

No fall protection whatsoever.

You Go Girl

I thought this was pretty impressive.  I have no idea how she is balancing that on her head.

The National Theater

A very beautiful old building.  This was at 7:30 a.m., so the sun is glaring.

Dogs Everywhere

Everywhere you look, there are dogs roaming the streets of Costa Rica. I've yet to see one on a leash.

Breakfast

I have not learned to love gallo pinto, or beans for that matter.

Corn Flakes!
